Back in June of last year, former President Trump set the U.S. on a course to leave the World Health Organization (WHO) in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. But under the direction of newly sworn-in President Joe Biden, the country will immediately reengage with the international health organization.
“Today, President-elect Biden will take action to cease the previous Administration’s process of withdrawing from the World Health Organization—an entity that is critical to coordinating the international response to COVID-19, advancing preparedness for future epidemics and pandemics, and improving the health of all people,” reads a January 20 press release from the new administration.
The statement, which covers a sweeping plan of immediate actions to address the country’s ongoing crises, also announced the new head of delegation for the U.S.: the country’s top epidemiologist, Anthony Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. Dr. Fauci will take part in this week’s ongoing WHO executive board meeting, delivering remarks to the board on January 21.
The U.S. exit from the WHO was expected to be finalized in July 2021, CNBC reports, one year after Trump officially notified the U.N. of his intention to withdraw, accusing the agency of being too “China-centric,” per CNBC, among other things. Public health experts largely saw the move to withdraw from the WHO during a global pandemic as a major threat to public health both here and abroad.
But some experts have criticized some aspects of the WHO’s approach to the pandemic, such as the organization’s delay in recognizing the significance of airborne coronavirus transmission, as the New York Times reported. And President Biden intends to improve some of the issues with the organization. “Once the United States resumes its engagement with the WHO, the Biden-Harris Administration will work with the WHO and our partners to strengthen and reform the organization, support the COVID-19 health and humanitarian response, and advance global health and health security,” according to the statement.
In the meantime, the commitment to supporting the WHO is important in restoring America’s role as a public health leader and helping to fight the pandemic on a global scale, especially given the fact that the U.S. is the largest funder of the WHO (another of Trump’s complaints).
This move is just one of Biden’s many announced policy changes that scientists and public health experts applauded. As SELF reported previously, the Biden-Harris administration’s plans to tackle the virus include seriously ramping up funding for testing and vaccination, among other things. Its sweeping strategy includes a number of executive orders, memos, and directives to “take initial steps to address these crises, including by changing the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing economic relief, tackling climate change, and advancing racial equity.”
