Underlying Health Conditions and Coronavirus: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe and Calm

Health Information Relationships

So, besides all the amazing desserts I’m making, how the hell am I coping with all of this uncertainty? Well, a whole jigsaw puzzle of strategies, some of which incorporate my science background. I’m going to take you through everything I do to keep myself physically and mentally well, all while worrying about COVID-19 as someone with chronic health conditions AND a beautiful cake rising in the oven.

Take from this some perspective on how I personally am approaching my health and my sanity amidst a looming global disaster, my prescription bottles, and stacks of peer reviewed papers. Before diving head first into all of these statistics, please take a deep breath and remember: people with all the risk factors can still recover. This virus can also be unkind to someone who is young and healthy.

1. I’m letting myself be worried enough to take good precautions, but not so worried I’m paralyzed.

I am trying to be worried in a way that I’m taking apt precautions, but not worried in a way that I’m spending all my time going down a Twitter spiral or throwing in the towel on managing my mental and physical health. Even with high risk conditions, we can try to reduce our overall risk of getting sick or having complications. Follow the CDC’s recommendations for protecting yourself. This includes washing your hands for 20 seconds frequently, disinfecting surfaces, practicing social distancing, etc. What we don’t want to do is go so overboard with worry and “safety” that we forget to do things like take walks, get fresh air, connect with loved ones, etc.

2. I’m making a plan with my doctor for how I’ll manage my condition(s) during all this.

In general, I think anyone with chronic health conditions or who is immunocompromised should have a conversation with their doctor. When I talked to mine (over the phone, of course), we discussed checking my liver and kidney levels regularly because my medications can tax those systems over time. We talked about still getting some exercise because exercise can improve lung capacity. In the absence of the rock climbing gym, my dog is getting many social-distancing-approved walks around the neighborhood.

The thing is, when you have a condition that’s complicated to treat, you have to balance a bunch of different factors. Maybe a medication is treating one symptom but causing another. In times like this, there are even more factors to take into consideration. Like, should I keep taking a medication that puts me at increased risk for a respiratory infection? Weighing all of this is a delicate balancing act and a deeply personal decision that you can only make in consultation with your doctors. In other words, have those conversations with your doctor(s) now if you haven’t already.

Call your doctor (and any specialists you work with to manage specific conditions) and ask them to talk you through your current situation. Go over all your medications with them so you understand if any of them are immunosuppressants. Ask them for a 90-day supply of prescription medication so you can leave your house less frequently or in case you need to quarantine.

For example, people with asthma probably already have an “asthma action plan” that includes avoiding triggers, making sure you’re using your inhaler properly, and practicing vigilant infection control. Talk to your doctor about similar plans you can put in place depending on your conditions.

Also ask your doctor, based on your condition, if you should take any extra precautions in terms of quarantining. If you have any high risk conditions that can be improved with adjustments to your lifestyle—like reducing or quitting smoking—it’s worth having a discussion on how to approach that, especially while we’re all social distancing.

3. I’m looking into options for outsourcing my errands.

Particularly if you’re at increased risk of severe new coronavirus symptoms, now is the time to limit how often you’re leaving the house. After all, the best way to minimize risk of getting new coronavirus is to lessen your chances of coming into contact with it.

4. I’m reminding myself that we only have so much data right now.

Anyone else have like four health problems (“but you look fine!”) and a bucket of medications you take daily and no firm answers on complications you might have if you ended up getting the new coronavirus? Same. We’re in uncharted territory.
