As a full-time pescatarian and dabbling vegetarian, I tend to throw down on quite a few vegetable-based dishes: kale Caesar salad (the kind with brussels sprouts, typically), cauliflower “wings,” you name it. With a robust variation of roughage in my diet, it should come as no surprise that I know my way around not only a grocery list, but also a bathroom. It might be a little TMI, but when your diet consists of lots of veggies, like mine does, your body tends to be pretty regular—which is how Aesop’s Post-Poo Drops became one of my favorite bathroom products of all time.
I first tried the drops after receiving them as a thoughtful housewarming gift from my editor after moving into a new apartment a few months ago. Although I’ve used plenty of flowery—and sometimes really intense—bathroom sprays from my local drugstore, these deodorizing drops are different. Unlike a “poo-poo” spray, the drops are transported directly into my toilet bowl with a built-in eyedropper (which means no sticky spray residue after the fact). Plus, as with all Aesop products, the bottle’s glass packaging is minimal and discreet, so it looks cute sitting on my bathroom counter.
While many classic air fresheners tend to smell like the plasticky fake version of a fruit, or a bouquet of flowers, these drops legitimately smell like the juice from a freshly squeezed orange. They feature notes of smell-good ingredients like tangerine, mandarin peel, and ylang-ylang to neutralize lingering odor. Since the drops are designed to be used after finishing up your business, I typically add no more than half a dropperful to my toilet after flushing and let it work its magic. The liquid starts off as an orangey hue, then eventually disperses in the bowl and turns clear, leaving behind a strong—but not overpowering—citrus scent that helps to nip any bad odors in the bud rather than superficially mask them. These fragrant drops make using the bathroom after any foul situations in my one-bedroom apartment more bearable, and have the effect of stepping into an orange grove rather than choking on flowers. Sometimes I’ll even squirt a little in the toilet just for kicks because it smells so good. They’re like my bathroom’s secret weapon.
