Telco firm, MTN is today officially kicking off its first ever Connected Expo at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, Uganda scheduled to end Monday 22nd October 2018 a day after its 20th birthday in Uganda.
The announcement of the expo was made at a press media event that was held at the MTN Offices in Nyonyi Gardens, in attendance of the MTN Uganda Chief Executive; Wim Vanhelleputte who said the telco together with its partners will be showcasing the part – where MTN has come from – and what they anticipate the future will be for them and more importantly for their customers.
The partners/sponsors include; Huawei, Stanbic Bank, Coca Cola, Mastercard, and The Club Beer.
As we mentioned before, the expo will be executed to mark the 20 years milestone for MTN Uganda. Then in 2019, between January and March, the expo will go regional and shall be taking place in several towns across the country. The towns include Entebbe, Jinja, Mbale, Gulu, Arua, Mubende, Hoima, Masaka, Fort Portal, and Mbarara.
However, with all this planned, and said, what should those that will attend expect from the 4 day event. In our opinion, with Huawei in this whole plotted event, expect the best in Internet of Things (IoT), Virtual Technologies, and Connected Technologies, from smart homes to self driving cars, and 5G networks.
5G
A test of 5G network. 5G is the fifth generation of cellular mobile communications and will succeed the 4G. Its performance targets include high data rate, reduced latency, energy saving, cost reduction, higher system capacity and massive device connectivity. Combining cutting-edge network technology and the very latest research, 5G should offer connections that are multitudes faster than current connections, with average download speeds of around 1GBps expected to soon be the norm.
Self Driven Car
If you have no idea what a self driving car is, in a layman’s term, it’s a car that drives itself. It has the capability of sensing its environment and moving with little or no human input. They combine a variety of sensors to perceive their surroundings, such as radar, computer vision, Lidar, sonar, GPS, odometry and inertial measurement units.
The drive-less car that will be exhibited at the expo will be tested by the MTN Group.
Smart Homes
With today’s technology, we have smart homes. This technology provides its home owners comfort, security, energy efficiency and convenience at all times, regardless of whether anyone is home. “Smart Home” is commonly used to define a residence that has appliances, lighting, heating, air conditioning, TVs, computers, entertainment systems, security, that are capable of communicating with one another and can be controlled remotely by a time schedule, from any room in the home, as well as remotely from any location in the world by phone or internet.
Virtual Reality
Getting lost in Huawei’s virtual reality (VR). VR might not sound new to many, even those that have heard of it but haven’t tested it as yet, it’s going to available at the expo. VR is basically an interactive computer-generated experience taking place within a simulated environment, that incorporates mainly auditory and visual, but also other types of sensory feedback.
Discounted Smartphones
MTN has discounted its smartphones to a low as UGX99,000. In brands of Huawei, Samsung, Tecno, Alcatel, Fero, ZTE to mention a few. In our expectation, the phones could come with free data bundles to last 30 days. This considering the fact that MTN promotion smartphones come with a lot of offers – even a free LTE simcard.
Entertainment
The organizers have organized a massive entertainment for its attendees throughout the 4 day event including a circus show. Expect performance from Uganda renowned Deejays, Artistes; Dr. Jose Chameleon, Juliana Kanyomozi, Beenie Gunter, Geo Steady, Levixone, Rema, Lydia Jasmine, YKee Benda, King Saha, among others.
