This morning, the ISACA Kampala Chapter and the National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U), held the inaugural SheLeads mentorship program focusing on promoting women leaders in technology and leadership.

Global surveys on breaking gender barriers for the leadership tech workforce show that the top barriers for women include lack of mentors and female role models in the field among other factors. It’s based on this that ISACA International has embarked on a program to increase the representation of women in technology leadership roles and the tech workforce.

The breakfast attracted an audience of women in various positions within the fields of Information Security, IT Auditors, IT Governance & IT Risk from both the public and the private sector.

In addition, the breakfast had a themed panel discussion, Empowering women leaders in technology – the role of mentorship, that included a panel of strong IT female leaders (CIOs) speaking about how it is possible to get to the C-level and Boardroom in Technology.

A recent survey carried out by ISACA on ‘The Future Tech Workforce: Breaking Gender Barriers,’ the following top barriers for women were identified:

  1. Lack of mentors (48%)
  2. Lack of female role models in the field (42%)
  3. Gender bias in the workplace (39%)
  4. Unequal growth opportunities compared to men (36%)
  5. Unequal pay for the same skills (53%)

From the above barriers, the SheLeads Tech mentorship program seeks to address the lack of mentors and specifically the lack of female role models in the field.

It’s against the above backdrop that NITA-U and ISACA seek to influence by creating a network of women leaders mentoring other women and inspiring them into leadership roles.

Ms. Vivian Ddambya, Director Technical Services, NITA-U delivering her keynote
