A Layman’s Understanding on 5G & Self Driving Cars, How They Work

Lifestyle

MTN Uganda celebrated making 20 Years in Uganda since its launch on 21st October, 1998. To celebrate this milestone, MTN organized with its Partners Huawei, Stanbic Bank, Mastercard and Club Beer – an Expo displaying an array of emerging technologies including connected homes, Virtual simulation and 3D dimensional videos, robots, connected cows etc.

My interest was the self-driving car. Could we have one soon in Uganda? How will it work.

World renowned technology companies Huawei and Ericsson among others have conducted tests with car manufacturers to have self driving cars. These autonomous vehicles can smoothly run with a well-connected 5G network; the next generation standard of wireless communications to follow 4G networks with vastly increased capacity, lower packet drops and faster speeds.

It offers ultra-fast connection faster data downloads and can handle a million connections than what 4G can offer today. Proponents of 5G today say it will aid self driving cars just like one show cased at the MTN Expo.

How does an autonomous car operate?
Autonomous cars are equipped with hundreds of sensors collecting and receiving data at the same time over a Network. This concept is called ‘Vehicle-to- everything’ ( V2X) and this type of technology is supported over a 5G connected Network. With enough 5G capable equipment, the V2X car will detect blind spots and avoid colliding with people, animals and other moving objects.

The V2X vehicle is fitted with chips and modems that can warn it against obstacles that cameras and radars might not catch, connecting them to their surroundings in a way that could eventually help them drive themselves.

These sensors will also pickup information about weather, road conditions, accidents and any other obstacles moving towards the car.

The information is quickly gathered on an on-board computer and sent to the cloud, processed and sent back to the vehicle to make a decision.

These autonomous cars could be smarter than humans.
To put it into perspective, let’s say vehicle A is traveling at 80mph and suddenly vehicle B pulls out in-front of vehicle A. Sensors in both vehicles would need to talk to each other to avoid collusion.

Either, car A would brake or car B would accelerate faster to avoid getting a collision with car A.

There has to be a transmission between sensors faster and in less time than a human would take to make a decision this is vastly supported over a 5G Network with well connected antennas and a well mapped geographic area.

MTN group recently with Ericsson tested 5G connectivity in South Africa.
