Nominee and award winning health startup; Matibabu has received an honorable mention from TIME Magazine as one of 50 best inventions of 2018.
The team of about three; Shafik Sekitto, Brian Gitta, and Atwine Morris invented, a Non-invasive diagnostic kit, dubbed Matibabu to detect malaria quickly and accurately without drawing blood. The device uses a custom-made portable device called a matiscope, which is connected to a smartphone, to do a rapid diagnostic test. The patient places his/her finger into the matiscope, and the application uses light sensors to detect the malaria-causing parasite within two minutes.
The system hasn’t been officially rolled out as it needs more testing, but early results conducted on a few patients have been promising.
The team has participated in a number of events emerging either winners or finalists. Their invention has given them a chance to travel around the world pitching to vast number of investors, funding companies, business men and women, among others.
Notbaly, the team in 2017 got the chance to showcase their invention at one of the world’s biggest showcase events ever; the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). A global consumer electronics and consumer technology tradeshow that takes place every January.
Thus, being listed as one of the best invention on a U.S-based news magazine is a big thing for the team. The startup promises to revolutionize the health sector in Uganda.
Just this year, Matibabu in June received £25,000 (roughly UGX119.4 million) from the Royal Academy of Engineering while its Founder Brian Gitta won the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. He become the first Ugandan to win the prestigious Africa Prize, and the youngest winner to date. In August, Brian also won the Young Achievers Award for Innovation and ICT.
