If you owned one of the thousands of Peloton Tread and Tread+ treadmills that were recalled earlier this year, you’re in luck: A new version of the Peloton Tread will be available to purchase next week.
The new version of the Tread, on sale in the U.S. on August 30 ($2,495), comes with the extensive video library and stellar fitness experience we’ve come to expect from Peloton—plus some brand new safety features. Those features include a new four-digit code Tread Lock that prevents the treadmill from being turned on by anyone without the authorization code. There will also be the familiar physical safety key, which can be removed and stored away when the treadmill is not in use to help prevent injury.
The launch comes just a few months after more than 125,000 Peloton treadmills (Tread and Tread+ models) were voluntarily recalled in May of this year. In April, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a warning to parents to avoid using the Tread+ due to the potential for small children or pets to get “sucked beneath” the treadmills. By May, the CPSC had received more than 70 accident reports due to the Tread+, including the death of one child.
At that point, Peloton issued a voluntary recall on the affected products and offered refunds and repairs to those who wanted them. The recall included 125,000 Peloton Tread+ treadmills as well as about 6,000 Peloton Tread units in the U.S. and Canada (which were only available for a limited time in the U.S. as part of an invite-only release). The recall on the Tread came after the CPSC received 18 reports of the screen detaching and falling, which posed a risk for injury.
Peloton’s new Tread will be available in the U.S., U.K., and Canada next week and in Germany later in the fall. But there’s no update on whether or not the Tread+ will see a similar safety update and re-release.
