Bagged Kale Recalled in 10 States Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

Health Information Relationships

Baker Farms just announced a kale recall due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes

The recall includes one-pound plastic bags of prewashed kale sold under three brand names: Baker Farms, Kroger, and SEG Grocers. The products were sold mainly in retail stores located in 10 states, according to the recall notice published on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website. The affected states are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New York, and Virginia.

All of the recalled bags of kale, which were distributed to stores between August 30 and September 1, 2021, have a best-by date of September 18, 2021, and production code 107020-21832 stamped on the front of the package.

Baker Farms discovered the issue on September 15, when a consumer notified the company that a kale product tested positive for listeria bacteria. No cases of foodborne illness connected to the recall have been reported to date.

Listeria poisoning can result in mild cases of illness in healthy individuals, causing symptoms like fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but these types of cases rarely get officially diagnosed. The infection mostly affects certain populations that are more vulnerable to severe illness, such as pregnant people, newborns, adults over age 65, and people with weakened immune systems.

Individuals in these groups are more likely to experience invasive listeriosis in which the infection spreads outside the gut to other parts of the body (such as the bloodstream, joints, or brain). When it spreads like this, the infection can potentially cause severe complications, the CDC explains. Invasive listeriosis can be life-threatening, and usually requires hospitalization and antibiotic treatment.

Symptoms of invasive listeriosis, which usually come on about one to four weeks after eating contaminated food, can include confusion, a stiff neck, loss of balance, and convulsions, in addition to fever and muscle aches, according to the CDC. In pregnant individuals, however, the symptoms may be mild and flu-like, including signs such as fatigue and muscle aches. But the infection can cause serious pregnancy complications (like a miscarriage) or life-threatening illness in fetuses and newborns, the CDC says.

Anyone concerned that they have one of the recalled bags of kale should see the recall notice on the FDA site for more identifying details, including the UPC codes for each product and photos of the packaging. If you do have a recalled product, Baker Farms recommends that you throw it out or return it to the store where you bought it for a full refund, as well as contact the company with any questions.
